Scanlan´s Tavern Gernika
Edit ThisSorry guys,i know when in Rome do as the Romans do ,but empires are old hat and the Basques do the best food in spain ,but for a good beer ,music and an all round good time it has to be a genunine Irish pub run by an Irishman, and in this case married to a local girl Olatz and she is the "Ban an ti" I mean the country looks Irish all emeraldish the locals speak Euskera basque which sounds like gaelic and they party like mad ,really put it up to the Irish i tell ya...
One rainey very Irish day in Bizkaia cutting along the rugged Basque coastline we headed inland a few klicks to the rural market town of Gernika .cold and wet we needed a good snug but hard to get in Euskadi or so we thought, their was the guinness lighted sign, the sign of civilisation..on entering Scanlan´s Tavern a warm aura embraced us in its arms,it was a heady mix of smells, music and spilled beer.people chatting away in basque, spanish and english so we had a few hot finnians what the fir an ti Patrick calls his hot whiskeys followed by the best pints of stout i have ever tasted outside Ireland, what a night..i will never slag off the foreign Irish pubs again ok their are many bad ones run by non Irish or worse still plastic paddys.but get the genunine article run by an authentic Irishman and wey hey and up she rises eirley in de morning!!
Scanlans i found out is a local institution and Patrick himself adopted by the locals no visit to the Basque Country is complete without a visit to this little rustic gem of a shebeen.slainte guys!!
