Canoeing on Lake Bohinj

Mark Farge

Lake Bohinj is located in the Julian Alps not far from more touristy Bled. It is close to the border with Italy and Austria in the northwest of Slovenia.

The area is extremely beautiful. It's as good looking as the nicest places in Switzerland or Austria, but life here is a whole lot cheaper. The water of the lake is of the deepest blue. The hike up to the falls is strenous, but pleasant.  Unfortunately, at the peak, the falls itself and the view is a bit of a disappointment.

In winter Bohinj offers good skiing possibilities. The Vogel slopes do not use artificial snow as do Kobla or Karavec (about an hours drive). Vogel has 35 km of slopes with 30% classified as beginner, 50% intermediate and 20% advanced. The longest run is 8 km.  Typically as in 2005-2006 the ski season at Vogel lasts from mid-December to early-May. there is one cable car at Vogel, 4 chair lifts and 4 drag lifts with a maximum vertical elevation of 1,230 m. Vogel proves spectacular views of Triglav and lake Bohinj. There are also three ski schools and equipment can be easily hired. Vogel is best described as a refreshingly quieter resort than those of France or Austria and is ideal for families who want to experience a relaxing ski holiday without the razzmatazz of discos or bar-upon-bar typically found elsewhere.

Nearby Kobla has 23 km of slopes and trails, 20% are beginner, 50% intermediate and 30% advanced. The longest run is 6 km. Kobla has 3 chair lifts and 3 drag lifts and is popular with Slovenes.

In summer Bohinj offers a multitude of hiking and biking trails. The highest point in Slovenia is Triglav (Three Heads) at 2864m. Triglav is usually inaccessible to hikers from late October to early June.  August and particularly September and October are the best times to make the climb.  There are about 20 different ways to reach the top of Triglav; the main approaches being to the south from Bohinj and Pokljuka offering varying degrees of difficulty. A less strenuous circular walk around Lake Bohinj (12 km) should take 3-4 hours.

Bohinj is often visited by tourists as an add-on to Lake Bled, although Bohinj is a destination in its own right.
