Top 5 Must Do's in Moscow
Edit ThisMoscow is the center of everything in Russia, whether it be culture
or finance. It is the largest city in Russia (also the capital), and
when it comes to the metropolitan area, it is the largest in Europe.
There are 3 international airports in Moscow, making the city easy and
cheap (depending on where you are departing from) to get to. This city
is also home to the second busiest metro in the world, which is great
because Moscow is so big that you will need transportation to get to
some of these sites. Moscow is very much a place of wonder and majesty.
Here you will find more than an abundant number of important sites.
1. The Kremlin - This is likely the most popular tourist site in
Moscow. It is a large walled area that includes numerous important
buildings. The Kremlin sits next to the Red Square and holds, in it's
walls, the State Kremlin Palace, the Senate building, the Czar Cannon
and Bell, Cathedral Square holding numerous churches, Ivan the Great
Bell Tower, the Armory, and the Terem, Faceted, and Great Krimlin Palaces.
2. The Red Square - The is one of the most well known city squares in the world. Around the square includes: Lenin's Mausoleum, St. Basil's Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral, the State Historical Museum, the Iberian Gate and Chapel and the statue of Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky.
3. Cathedral of Christ the Savior - This is the tallest Eastern Orthodox church in the world. Construction of the building was done in 1860, but it would be another 20 years of painting by some of the most talented Muscovites before doors opened. In 1931 the cathedral was bombed to pieces, but it was rebuilt in it's full splendor.
4. Novodevichy Convent - One of the most popular cloisters (a building with a covered walkway facing a courtyard) in Moscow. Attached is the Our Lady of Smolensk 5-domed cathedral built between 1524-1525. The wall paintings inside are some of the most beautiful in the city. 4 other churches are in the square as well as ancient artifacts such as paintings, ceramics, woodwork and textiles.
5.
Moscow Zoo - Here is a site for all ages, all religions and all
interests! The zoo was founded in 1864 and has slowly gotten larger.
Now there are 6,000 animals of over 1,000 species. You will find marsupials, bats, lemurs, elephants, sloths, giraffes just to name a
few. Adult admission is a little over $3.
