Designed by the great portuguese architect Ventura Terra, on the begining of the century, both the Santa Luzia church and the hotel, its restaurant has a privileged localization. In the summer time, you can eat in the esplanade, with the gorgeous view of Viana do Castelo, the river estuary and the sea. Their best dishes are grilled fish, grilled meat and local pastries. Taberna do Valentim

Best tavern in town, closed on sundays. Try "caldeirada" (assorted fish) and "natas do céu" (heaven cream) at this typical tavern speciallized in fresh fish (it's so speciallized in fresh fish that it is closed in days of storm, when fish boats cannot go to sea).

This restaurant is in an old medieval house, also one of the best restaurants in town, and for some people, the best. Worth reading the menu.

Cozinha das Malheiras

Very close of the Praça da Republica, the Malheiro Reimão family palace is the place for this restaurant. His owner, Avelino Palhares dos Santos, checks the kitchen himself. Try the "bacalhau à Cozinha das Malheiras" (Cod-fish), roasted fish, sea bean-stew,"cabrito à Serra D'Arga" (suckling goat), "papas com rojões" (a tipical pork).

A typical restaurant of the province of minho, installed in an old public oven. There you can see folk dance and music every saturday dinner (and fridays on high season). Nice and warm. Try "gambas grelhadas" (grilled schrimps), "papas sarrabulho" ( a typical pork dish), grilled fishes, octopus, suckling goat, fondue bourlguisnhone. Home made deserts: "rabanadas com natas" (bread with cream), and others. Excellent wine-cellar and the local Viana do Castelo wine. Prices around PTE3,500.00. Credit cards accepted.
