Palácio da Regaleira
Edit This
Palácio da Regaleira, built at the beginning of the 20th century, emerges from the scenery like an enormous, marvelous monument.
António Monteiro, owner of a large fortune, bought from Baron Regaleira a land fed by many springs. He invited Manini – the set designer from the São Carlos Opera House in Lisbon – to design this fantastic romantic dream in an exuberant neo-Manuelian style. The remarkable gardens are placed in a very specific arrangement that tells a story. The grounds are full of tunnels, wells, secret ways and exquisite sculptures. A profusion of ornaments arrayed by the Palace and Gardens, copied from Manuelian style, are rife with Freemasonry symbolism. Several exotic interpretations are possible. There are many books about Regaleira Palace with different theories about it. To gain a good understanding of this Palace it is important to make a guided tour, taking about an hour and a half.
