Eating Out in Póvoa de Varzim

Edit This
Finding a restaurant in Póvoa de Varzim is easy and the variety is large. Keep in mind that Póvoa has one of the most ancient fishing traditions in Portugal, with nation-wide fame since the 17th century. Not surprisingly, the local staple food are fish and seafood and some local dishes include the Pescada à Poveira (hake with potatoes), Arroz de Marisco (seafood rice), and Lagosta Suada (lobster).

"Restaurante 31 de Janeiro" (near Igreja da Lapa), "Restaurante Belo Horizonte", (near the Casino), and "Restaurante São José" (in the Passeio Alegre Square), all around the seaport and the Bairro Sul fishermen quarter are places where you can taste the local cuisine.

If you are into fastfood, consider tasting the local fastfood known as Francesinha. If you want to try the very own version of the city ask for Francesinha Poveira and the preferred place for the original Francesinha Poveira is 'Café Guardassol' in the beach area, but consider trying the Francensinhas of 'Zé D'Amura' and 'União Casa das Francesinhas' in the Estrada Nacional 13 road.

In Estrada Nacional 13 road you can also find several other interesting restaurants: 'Tourigalo' (Portuguese Piri-piri-Chicken), 'O Marinheiro' (in the shape of a boat) and 'Shelsea' for seafood and Portuguese barbeque, 'The Lingerie Restaurant' (erotic), 'o Transmontano' (regional Portuguese), 'O Manjar dos Leitões' (roasted piglets), 'Restaurante Chinês Li' (Chinese) and several others. If you are into another types of cuisine, such as  international, Brazilian or vegetarianism consider looking around Avenida Vasco da Gama.
