Enjoy the Best Sardine Festival in Portugal

If you are visiting Praia da Rocha, when to go is a decision which is not difficult to make. Praia da Rocha literally means the “Rock Beach” in English. It is situated in the municipality of Portimao, Algarve, at the southern part of Portugal. The beach faces the Atlantic Ocean with its varying shades of green to dark blue. Praia da Rocha is a favorite summer place for families and has become a tourist center.

Portimao Sardine Festival

The Portimao Sardine Festival is an annual celebration which takes place during the second week of August. The event usually takes place at the River walk in Portimao or Riverside or Quayside. This is just a 20-minute walk from Praia da Rocha. The fun begins at 6 p.m.  In 2010, tickets sell for $4.50 per adult; children under ten years old can enter for free. If you want to have some food with your ticket, buy an $8 ticket which includes a plate of sardines, bread, salad and a drink.

Highlights of the Festival

The highlight of the festival may be sardines; however, you can also sample Portuguese dishes inside the Riverside. There are fun and games like beating the previous record for the most sardines eaten in a span of 15 minutes. The music concert starts at 10 p.m. and adds excitement to the already lively atmosphere. On the last day of the festival, expect to see an awesome display of fireworks.
