One of the best places for tourism in all of Portugal is Praia da Rocha; shopping, beach activities, warm weather, affordable resort accommodations and an active nightlife all work together to draw tourists from around Europe and throughout the world here every summer. Praia da Rocha is closest to the town of Portimao, and while this city is purposefully designed as a tourist destination, that doesn't serve as a hindrance to many people. The beach is beautiful and full of opportunities for outdoor activities like swimming, boating, volleyball and sunbathing. When you've tired of relaxing in the sand and sun, however, turn to the many shopping options instead.

Portimao Mall

The best place to go for retail shopping is the nearby shopping mall in Portimao. Available through a quick taxi or bus ride, this mall is home to many international designers and plenty of retail stores for your every shopping need.

Souvenirs

Praia da Rocha is home to a number of different stores that specialize in local handicrafts and souvenirs. These stores dot the beach and the area along the main streets through town. Be careful of overpriced goods, and be sure to compare prices between several stores before you make your selection. Many of these items will be found for less money in Portimao.

Outdoor Market

If you happen to schedule your trip to fall on the first Monday of a new month, look out for the town center outdoor market. This once per month market includes hundreds of vendors and stalls set up with a variety of different goods. These include leather products, textiles, wood carvings, other arts and crafts, local food and more. It's the best place to find a souvenir to take home for a reasonable price. You can also barter with the sellers at this outdoor market, which is something that you will not likely be able to do when you visit a bigger shopping mall or an established indoor store.

Shopping in Praia da Rocha is a great way to get up and move around or to get out of the sun after you've spent a day or a few hours on the beach. Keep an eye out for pickpockets, as in every tourist city. However, crime is on the average quite low for this city, and a little caution is all you should need.
