Porto, like any other European city, is bursting with culture, art and history from the many churches, museums and landmarks within it and witness a number of Porto festivals throughout the year. However, to truly experience Porto, one needs to witness traditions and customs of the natives. Many tourists time their travel to be able to take part in the many Porto festivals. Here are some of the most interesting ones. If you are planning a visit to Porto, it would be great to time your trip on the festival that intrigues you the most.

Night of Kings

This January festival’s highlights are musical concerts and traditional “Janeiras” carolers, much like Christmas carolers, but these street singer from door to door singing on New Year.

Oporto International Film Festival

Fantasporto as it is called in the city, happens in late February until early March. The festival honors films and filmmakers who have gone “outside the box.” In short, they promote unique films and filmmaking methods.

Porto Interceltic Festival

In March, witness traditional music at its best in this festival which features performers from various parts of Portugal and other countries since the 1990s. 

Holy Week

Porto is a predominantly Catholic city, so Holy Week is celebrated intensively in either March or April. Traditions for the Holy Week are usually outside of the city. One can see how locals perform religious rituals such as processions, re-enactments and even an actor Jesus carrying a heavy wooden cross.  The Holy Week ends with a happy celebration of Easter Sunday.

Porto in Fashion

In May, Porto showcases its textile industry through fashion shows and exhibits of lines by old and upcoming designers. May also sees processions of flower rugs, parades of university students’ floats and the International Theater Festival.

Festival of Sao Joao

This June festival is one of the most vibrant street festivals in Europe. Nights come alive with decorations hanging from residences and street posts. Then, on the night of the Saint, people celebrate on the streets with music, dance and traditional hammers, representative of John the carpenter.

Rhythms Festival and Noites Ritual Rock

The latter part of June sees the celebration of European and international music, while the Noites Ritual Rock in August features more modern bands. September to October is a time for band and music competitions.

Traditional Artworks Market of Porto

This event in December exhibits beautiful Christmas decoration. Tourists can also buy local crafts at great prices during this event.
