Things to do in Lisbon

Edit This

Lisbon, the capital and the largest city of Portugal, has plenty of things for the tourists to indulge themselves in. Lisbon Things to Do includes the following:

Belem

In Lisbon, the most popular historical site is Belem. From this place, many Portuguese explorers started their voyage of discovery. Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan and Bartholomeu Dias all set sail from here on their route to discovery of a new land. Belem has an array of stunning attractions, including Jeronimos Monastery, Belem Tower, Berardo Museum, Tropical Garden, Belem Palace, Ajuda Palace, Ajuda Botanical Garden, Maritime Museum, Coaches Museum, and 25 de Abril Bridge. Jeronimos Monastery is a monument that was built in memory of Vasco da Gama and his successful voyage. Tombs of many famous persons including Vasco da Gama himself and King Manuel are placed inside the monument. Built in 1515, Belem Tower, on the other hand, is a fortress standing as a mute witness to many voyages of discovery. Berardo Museum boasts of a vast collection of modern arts.

Alfama

Nestled between the Castle of Lisbon and the Tejo River is a beautiful old district of Lisbon called Alfama. Alfama looks fascinating with its zigzag, cobbled streets and azulejos-tiled walls. The medieval Castle of Sao Jorge nearby Alfama offers a splendid vista of this sprawling neighborhood of Lisbon. The sites worth visiting in Alfama include Museum of Decorative Arts, Lisbon Cathedral, Monastery of São Vicente de Fora and the Church of Santa Engrácia. Lisbon Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in Lisbon City. Monastery of São Vicente de Fora has the burials of the kings of the House of Braganza and the Church of Santa Engracia has been transformed into a National Pantheon for Portuguese legendaries.

Santa Justa Elevator

Santa Justa Elevator is a 150-feet high elevator connecting the lowest point of the city, Baixa, to the highest point of the city, Bairro Alto. Also known as Carmo Lift, Santa Justa Elevator was constructed in 1892. The top storey of the elevator can be reached by a spiral staircase and, at the top, you will find a terrace offering an outstanding panoramic view of the Lisbon Castle and the sprawling Baixa neighborhood.

Lisbon River Cruise

If you want to view Lisbon from a different perspective, you must try a mini-cruise down the Tagus River. Since Lisbon overlooks both Tagus River and Atlantic Ocean, cruising down the river will offer you spectacular views of the monuments and castles in the hills. Additionally, the panoramic views of Parque das Narcoes will regale you with the astounding beauty that the city has to offer.
