Shopping in Lisbon

Edit This
Lisbon is also a city for shopping, where you can choose between traditional shops and modern shopping malls. The best parts for shopping is the pedestrians area between Praça do Comércio and Largo S. Domingos Here you’ll find lots of fashionable shops with all the great international brands. If you really want to spend a lot of money, go shopping on the Avenida da Liberdade . The best tourist shops are around the Castello S. Jorge, if you want to buy some local specialties, you’d better go to Bairro Alto and avoid the touristical highlights.

If you prefer big shopping malls, and shop at very reasonable prices, you shouldn't miss Colombo, one of the biggest malls in Europe. It can be reached easily through underground, just take the Blue Line and leave on Colégio Militar station.

This city offers great shopping but at much lower prices than other cities in Western Europe. A lot of the shops are worth entering not just for the products but also for the decoration and architecture.

Shopping Areas for Alternative and High-end Goods

If you are looking for high fashion and the popular international brands then you should go to Avenida da Liberdade and the Chiado Quarter. The Avenida da Liberdade is the main avenue in the city as it is reminiscent of the Champs-Elysees in Paris. This avenue contains Emporium Armani, Escada, Carolina Herrera, Ermenegildo Zegna, Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton and D&G.

The Chiado is the cultural center of the city and has a history that dates back to the 16th century. The Chiado contains shopping, a theater. cafes and bookshops. It is here where you can find Hermes, Cartier and other art nouveau jewelry shops.

If you are looking for alternative fashion then visit the Bairro Alto, near the Chiado, which is the bohemian heart of the city. It is in this area that you will find the writers and artists. While the area is very quiet during the day, it is transformed at night. The alternative stores stay open late into the night and you will find a wide range of individuals here.

Markets in the City

The Feira de Ladra is the main flea market and translates into "Thieves’ Market." This market or a version of it has been occurring in the city since the 12th century. This market is found in the Sao Vincente de Fora district on the Campo de Santa Clara Street. The start is by the Tram 28 stop at the Arco de Sao Vincente. Here you can find furniture, CD’s, stamps, military objects, clothes, artisan goods and much more.

The Ribeira Market is the largest open-air food market in the city. It is open all days of the week except Sunday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.  It is here that you will find a huge selection of seafood, spices, fruits, herbs, meats and vegetables. There are items that make the mouth water and those that can make you lose your appetite. This is also the least expensive place to buy food.

Shopping Malls

Lisbon has some of the largest shopping malls found in Europe with Colombo being the most popular. It contains many stores, a leisure complex, a cinema, a roller coaster, a bowling alley, restaurants and a go-cart track. El Corte is the largest department store.  The oldest shopping mall is Amoreriras. The Armazens do Chiado is the most central and the top floor contains restaurants and cafes.
