This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can explore the entire tower. There are many historic and fun statutes and sculptures. You can find a rhinoceros and other exotic beasts.  Much of the design is Moorish as the architect also worked in Morocco on other fortifications.

St. George’s Castle overlooks the city and has sections linked to the Romans, Visigoth and the Moors. You can explore the entire castle and see its cannons, underground chambers and walk the walls. Inside there is an exhibit on the castle and you can take a rest and get a bite to eat at the restaurant. The ruins include 18 towers and many walls. You can climb these to see great views of the city. There is even a periscope in the Tower of Ulysses. On the grounds feed the geese, peacocks and ducks.

Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most ornate and impressive structures in Portugal. This building was constructed to commemorate the famous voyage of Vasco da Gama. Coaches and Ships – Fun Museums

The maritime museum in town not only has great exhibits as Portugal’s maritime culture and importance is known throughout the world. The museum also has its own children’s sections. Two highlights of the museum include an 18th century ceremonial barge and a 19th century cabin form a yacht. The museum also has the largest collection of astrolabes in the world and replica maps from the 16th century.

If your kids love the traditional fairy tales like Cinderella, then you should take them to the coaches museum. This contains the largest collection of coaches in the world. Many of these coaches were used by royalty and are extremely ornate. These coaches show the immense wealth found in Portugal.

Down by the Waterfront

Parque das Nacoes is a great park along the waterfront for families. Much of the architecture is futuristic as this was where the World Fair was held in 1998. One of the main attractions is the Oceanarium which is one of the most impressive aquariums in the world. There are also water gardens, a marina, casino and viewing tower.
