Portugal, a very popular tourist hotspot, has come to be known for its Lisbon bars and cafes. From Gothic architecture to lively boulevards, Lisbon is renowned not only for its historical culture but also for its café and nightlife culture. Such cafes and bars are mostly found in the quaint and faded building structures in the city of Lisbon. Here are a few recommendations for you.

Cinco Lounge

Run by an English couple, this bar-cum-lounge situated in Principe Real brews the best cocktails in the city. All cocktails fall within the € 7 bracket. A must try are the rum-based Mojitos, the pumpkin martini and the special of the day! Cinco’s ambiance is just perfect for all occasions whether you’re out on a romantic date, with a group of friends or simply alone. The warm and dimly lit bar has large windows that offer a good street side view. Interestingly, Cinco Lounge was listed in the top 100 bars around the world by Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

Bar Do Rio

Also known as the playground for adults, Bar Do Rio is one of the more popular bars and is a must visit for first-timers in Lisbon. The nicely designed bar features quirky stuff like trains, drums and tiny spaceships. It doesn’t serve cocktails, however. It’s notable to mention that the music played here is excellent, ranging from electronic to fusion, jazz, hip hop and soul. Open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., it’s a good idea to head there early to avoid crowds.

Benard

Perched on Rua Garrett, the quaint Benard Café is one of the many historic points found in Lisbon. A must-have while here are the chocolate croissants and coffee among a host of different teas and pastries. This outdoor café offers an excellent view of the busy Lisbon streets, while the café’s interiors remind one of old world times. It’s open from Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Cha da Lapa

Not many people know about this hidden gem of a patisserie. Cha da Lapa is a Victorian-styled teahouse that serves freshly baked butter and jam scones, creamy éclairs, cakes and tarts. The menu offers good lunch choices as well as an assortment of teas and coffees. Located on Rua do Olival 8, Cha da Lapa is open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily.

Café Dos Teatros

If you happen to be on the lookout for an artsy café, try this one (on Rua Antonio Maria Cardoso). Here you’ll be mingling with local artists while you sip on fresh juices and nicely brewed teas. The soups, salads and freshly made sandwiches are good. The café is open from 12:00 noon to 1:00 a.m. from Monday to Saturday.
