Getting Around in Portugal
Edit ThisThere is an efficient Portugal Transportation system available for local travel within the country. Most tourist destinations are conveniently accessible and multiple transport options are available to suit the traveler's needs.
Traveling by Bus
There are three kinds of bus services available in Portugal. Expressos are comfortable, fast buses that connect some of the main cities. Rapidas are the quick local buses with few stops, and Carreiras are buses that halt at every crossroad. Tourists would need to travel in the municipal buses only in the big cities of Lisbon or Porto. In other towns, most of the tourist places are within walking distance.
Domestic Air Travel
Portugali and TAP Air Portugal are the two national airlines of Portugal, connecting all major domestic destinations. Lisbon airport is located at a distance of 7 km from the city center. Tourists can use the airport shuttle bus that departs every day to Estoril and Cascais.
Rail Transportation
Portugal has an efficient network of trains running all across the country. The frequent services of the express trains ensure that the tourist areas of Cascais and Sintra are well-connected to Lisbon. Tourists can purchase special tickets valid for one to three weeks, depending on the length of their stay. Purchase of the Cartao de Familia allows families to avail special discounts on journeys of more than 150 kilometers. Visitors in the age group of 12 to 26 can make use of the International Youth Ticket. Senior citizens can avail a discount of 50 percent. There is no charge for children under 4 and children between 4 and 11 are required to pay only half fare.
Driving by Car
It is easy to hire a car from the main towns and airports. All those visitors who are above 18 years of age and possess a valid national or international driving license are allowed to hire a car. Document requirements include a log book or rental contract, adequate car insurance and an official document along with a photograph. All international traffic signs are followed on the roads in Portugal.
Hiring a Taxi
Taxi service is very convenient in Portugal. Within the city the tourists are charged a standard meter fare. Beyond the city limits the charge is per kilometer and tourists have to pay for the return fare as well. There is an additional charge for carrying luggage.
Sea or River Transport
All coastal ports and those along the major rivers are well connected in Portugal. Tourists wishing to travel by sea or river can contact the local port information desk to make any inquiries. There are river cruise trips available from major cruise lines.
