After boarding the cable car you will go on a 15-minute ride that covers more than 12,000 feet of the city of Funchal. From the cable car you will be able to see the Monte Palace Tropical Garden from a bird's eye view.

Whale and Dolphin Watching

You can go out on boats to spot whales and dolphins traveling by. When the ocean rapidly drops off by the coast you can often spot whales and dolphins while standing on shore. While out on a boat or standing along the shores you can sometimes spot Sei and Fin Whales, and you can even find sperm and humpback whales. In terms of dolphins you can find a large variety of them including bottle nose and common dolphins.

Monte Toboggan Rides

These toboggan rides used to be the main transportation to Funchal for the people who live in Monte, but now they simply serve as a major tourist attraction. The toboggan ride allows you to travel quickly down the mountain to Funchal inside of a wicker sled that is attached to wooden runners. Two men steer the toboggan and use their boots as brakes. The ride takes about 10 minutes and covers 1.2 miles, while reaching speeds of up to 30 mph.

Big Game Fishing

If you're looking for a unique fishing experience, something that many people claim to be a once in a lifetime event, you will want to grab a spot on one of the boats available in Funchal's Marina for big game fishing. You'll be able to catch blue marlin or big eye tuna during the months of June to September. Other months you might even be lucky enough to catch a blue shark or even a hammerhead. Newcomers don't have to worry because you will also receive a course in how to handle the rod and reel for big game fishing.
