Sights in Funchal

Edit This

Funchal Sights are some of the most unique sights in the world, mainly because you can never duplicate something that nature has made. Not only can you see some of the beautiful nature that the island has to offer, but there are also plenty of other things to see, including museums and churches. The churches are some of the most interesting things to see because of the beautiful architecture.

Lido Promenade

The promenade has always been a well-know spot for tourists, but it has been further developed to help attract even more tourists to the area. The Lido Promenade offers tourists and locals a great place to come and relax. The entire area is lined with palm trees and botanical gardens form a border around the area. Here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the ocean while enjoy a nice dinner at one of the many restaurants or even a nice swim in one of the three public swimming pools.

Gardens of Madeira Island

In the city of Funchal, you will find numerous gardens; some of them are natural gardens while others have been carefully maintained. The island of Madeira is known for its natural beauty; in fact, it is often referred to as the "floating garden in the Atlantic." One of the best gardens to visit is the Municipal Garden, which is located in the center of Funchal. The garden contains 8300 square meters of flowers, tress, and plants that are both native to the island and to different parts of the world.

Sao Pedro

This is one of the most populated parishes of Funchal; it is also one of the most significant. In the 15th century many noble families began building their homes in this secluded area, including the first and second Captain of Funchal. Visiting this historical place provides you with a look at some of the history of the city and allows you to view some historical buildings and their beautiful architecture. Some places to visit in this area include the Sao Pedro Palace and Rua da Carreira.

Igreja de Sao Pedro

This church was ordered to be built in 1590, but it took several years after that for it to be built because of all the changes that were made to the original design. What should have taken six years to finish wasn’t completed until the 18th century because of all the changes made to the original plans, but those changes made the church one of the most beautiful churches in the town. One of the most unique features is the rooster on top of the colorful tiles in the church tower. You can only see this work if you walk up "Calcada de Santa Clara" and look back into the church tower.

Madeira Story Centre

This museum allows visitors to explore the history of the island of Madeira. Inside you can see how the island was created from a volcano. You can also see the first landing of a hydroplane near the island. The museum also follows the lives of some important leaders from history, including Napoleon and Churchill.
