Getting Around in Funchal
Edit ThisThere are various Funchal Transportation options available. The city has only automobile transport, as Madeira Island has no train lines. Transportation is good and reliable, and you can count on good services. Here are the best choices:
Taxi
Taxi services are widely available in Funchal. They can be easily distinguished, as all of the cars are painted in yellow and have blue stripes on both sides. They also have a taxi sign on top. Taxi rates are regulated by the government, although it is not an unusual thing for the drivers to work on a kilometer basis, without turning their taximeter on. It is important to either disagree with that (in order to avoid frauds) and insist that the meter is on, or negotiate the price prior to taking the ride. Along with Portuguese, many of the drivers speak Spanish and English at a fluent level. If you have extended transportation needs, hiring a taxi for the whole day is possible, too.
Bus
Buses are also a good option for traveling around Funchal. Again, they are yellow in color, just like the taxis. They are very punctual, and you will rarely have to wait on a bus stop for more than 5 minutes. Ticket prices vary. You can buy a ticket from the driver for about $1.8, but with a double ticket for $1.7 bought in advance, you can take 2 rides, thus saving more than $1. There are also guided sightseeing buses that drive you around town. Riding on them costs around $10.
