Festivals in Funchal
Edit ThisThere are many Funchal festivals which celebrate the famous wine industry of this place and also the music that many people love.
Madeira Wine Festival
In September, on the Island Madeira, an annual wine festival is held in the capitol city, Funchal. During this time, both locals and tourists come together and celebrate the harvest of grapes that are used to make Madeira's world famous wine.
Natives use traditional harvesting methods during the festival. The Wine Festival begins in Camara de Lobos; this is where the live harvest show takes place. Then, grapes are gathered and smashed by foot for all to see. Light and sound shows take place in Funchal to celebrate the revered grapes.
Madeira Flower Festival
This a festival which starts in the Spring season. During this time, the city of Funchal is decorated with flowers. Amid the festival, a parade is held with floats made of flowers and dancers performing in the streets. There is also a new tradition that takes place called the "Wall of Hope." The "Wall of Hope" is decorated with flower by children in the city. It represents hope for a more peaceful world. The best way to get around during the Madeira Flower Festival is by foot.
Funchal Jazz Festival
The Funchal Jazz Festival takes place every year to honor this great music genre. This festival usually takes place during the months of June and July.
The Jazz Festival's goal is to revisit the classics and legends of Jazz, whilst exploring new and innovative technology and instruments in the Jazz genre. The activities during the festival include jam sessions, as well as concerts. This celebration adds a musical vibe to Funchal festivals.
