are many great activities here to explore the rich culture and history
of the area that are easily accessible for visitors of all ages and
mobility levels. Enjoy a laid back trip to the city as part of a
senior-focused tour group, or explore on your own to see all that
Portugal has to offer.
Senior Travel Activities
A trip through Old Town Faro is a must for anyone traveling to the city.
This historical area of the city is located within easy walking
distance from most points within the area, including the train and bus
stations, and is enclosed by Old Town walls that give it much beauty and
distinction. With areas of the Old Town dating back to Roman times,
this is 1 step through history you won't want to miss. Either tour the
area on your own or arrange for a guide if you want a local's perspective of
the history of the area.
Religious sites here are plentiful and should be a part of any trip to the city.
Explore the Chapel of Bones (Capela de Ossos) where the visitor comes
face to face with mortality while viewing the exhumed bones of over 1200
monks that decorate the unique chapel's walls, making it 1 of the
most well-known attractions of the city. Carmo Church is also a nice
stop to view the historical church that was created in 1713. Both sites
are centrally located and within easy walking distance from the Old Town
area.
The Faro Archaeological Museum is a great way to spend an afternoon in
Faro. Construction for this building began in 1519 as a church. Later
it was used as a cork factory and then a museum. Currently it holds a
wonderful collection of 16th and 17th century religious paintings from
various Algarve temples.
