Festivals in Faro
Edit ThisFaro festivals and events are some of the best in Algarve, with events ranging from religious celebrations to large Portuguese sporting events. Festivals and events draw large crowds here, often filling the city's 30,000 seat stadium and spilling out into the streets throughout the city.
Visiting Faro during a festival can be a great way to see the city from a different perspective. If you will be in Faro during any of these festivals, be sure to plan ahead and secure lodging well in advance, as many hotels fill up around the time of many of these festivals.
Festivals and Events in Faro
One of the largest events in the city is the Rallye Biker, one of the largest motorcycling rallies in all of Europe. The event takes place in late June or early July and includes a large parade of motorbikes through the streets.
Carnival is also a huge holiday in Portugal and Faro has a large festival to celebrate it. Generally taking place in February, the festival takes place through all the streets of the city with music, floats and processions being the entertainment.
Faro plays host to an annual International Music Festival featuring classical music performed by top Portuguese orchestras. This great cultural event takes place in April or May and involves many performances at the Teatro das Figuras.
The Ria Formosa Festival kicks off August with traditional food, local beer and seafood in this citywide festival. Based at Cathedral Square in the city's center, this is a great festival that provides you with a sampling of the rich culinary heritage of the area.
August also brings the Sardine Festival where guests will enjoy sampling the grilled sardines fresh from the waters surrounding the city, while September 7th brings the Faro Holiday Festival, a large citywide festival that most residents greatly enjoy.
Faro residents celebrate All Saints Day (November 1), Independence Day (December 1) and New Years Eve with a variety of parties and processions that spill into the streets and create a jubilant atmosphere.
Any of these diverse events in the city make a great time to visit Faro. You will see some traditional culture and overall fun atmosphere that will make your trip to Faro all that more memorable for years to come.
