Top 5 Must Do's in Albufeira

Edit This

While Albufeira is known as a beach and resort town there are several other activities that are available to occupy one's time. Travelers should definitely allow some time to soak up the sun and enjoy the cool ocean waters, but in case of bad weather or an off season trip there are several more Albufiera must do's.

1. Adega do Cantor Winery

Portugal is known for some exquisite wines so why not take a day to go wine tasting at Albufeira's local winery. Wines cost on average about 10£ per bottle and the range of selections is quite impressive. There is another reason to visit the winery. It is owned by 80's pop legend Cliff Richard.

2. Shore Excursions

Other interesting ways to see the shores of the Algarve are on replicas of pirate ships and jet skis. Look for some secret beaches and even watch the dolphins.

3. Zoo Marine

The Zoo Marine of the Algarve offers dolphin shows and is a great place for families and kids. It is open year round and makes a nice change from the crowded beaches. The cost of admission for adults is quite high at about 28 euros per person but small children do get in for free.

4. The Lighthouse at Sagres

A short bus ride from Albufeira takes you to the last stop on the Algarve, the town of Sagres. Although the town of Sagres is quite small with a few shops, bars and hotels, there is one stunning attraction to see. At the very end of the town is the lighthouse which is the last remains of Henry the Navigator's school of navigation. The lighthouse is still functional and is the most powerful one in Europe. The views from the cliff side are stunning as visitors can see where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Make sure you take your wind breaker as the winds can get quite high from this position.

5.The Old Town Market

Market day in the old town is an experience worth having. With everything available from fresh fruit and vegetables, to clothing, shoes and art, this market has something for everyone. On a slow day the market has close to 50 different vendors but on the busier days there are close to 100. The prices are good, out-selling most of the local shops.
