When it comes to Albufeira, things to do are not a problem. Albufeira is a beach resort town on the southern coast of Portugal in a region known as the Algarve. However, this fact doesn't mean that the only thing to do is lie on the sand all day and soak up the sun. There are several places of interest one can explore in Albufeira.

Praia dos Barcos

Translated from Portuguese, this means "the beach of the boats." The beach earned its name due to all the abandoned fishing boats that litter the shore. The owners, who are old fisherman leave them to lie in between uses. The boats make an interesting scene but the beach is also perfect for sunbathing and swimming.

Igreja do Sao Sebastiao

The outside of this church is sweet and charming but what makes the visit worthwhile is the altar. The gilded altar stands over a 14th century statue of Our Lady of Orada who is clutching the baby Jesus. The church makes a wonderful religious and historical site.

Capela da Misericordia

Its claim to fame is that it is the oldest building still standing in Albufeira. The architecture, a gothic style from the 15th century, is worth a visit.

Tapete Magico Crafts Workshop

This is a must see. Tapete Magico sells handwoven crafts all created by the physically and mentally disabled. Handwoven table cloths, carpets and mats are all for sale from people who have been taught the workings of a hand loom. Those who would like a small tour or demonstration need only ask. The owners love showing off the works of their employees and their project.

Igreja da Matriz

This church was consecrated in 1800. It is important for 2 reasons. First, it replaced the original church which was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. Second, the most striking feature of the church is its bell tower. It was added to the church in 1869 to house a set of 8 bells.

Praia da Oro

Translated from Portuguese, it means "golden beach." This portion of the Albufeira beach literally touches the resort that shares its name. Praia da Oro is full of golden sand and is close to many of the shops and cafes. It is the perfect spot for those who desire the perfect beach experience.
