Budget Travel Ideas in Albufeira
Edit ThisBeing a resort town, many may think Albuferia is an expensive place to visit. Although the extremely cheap, backpacking accommodation might get scarce, especially in high season, Portugal tends to be one of the less expensive countries in Europe to visit. There are some good opportunities for Albufeira budget travel.
Transportation
There is a good system of buses around Albufeira that provide links to the other towns and cities on the Algarve. A single journey is 1.10 euro with no transfers allowed. For those who need to take multiple journeys, a 3-euro day ticket is available. The EVA bus company also offers multi-journey passes for various amounts, depending on the number of journeys you take. These do work out cheaper if you plan more than 3 bus trips during your stay.
Free Activities
Walking through the old town of Albufeira is something anyone can do for free. The buildings are a mix of old Moorish and Spanish colonial architecture and date back centuries. The old town is famous for its tiny narrow streets that seem to go on forever. The old town also provides several small cafes, bars and shops to explore, and prices are a fraction of the cost you would pay in the new part of town. A taxi ride to the old town costs between 5 to 7 euros but for those on a tight budget there is a bus. It is also possible to walk but some of the hills are a bit steep--so be prepared.
One of the most well-known features of Albufeira is the beaches. All of the public beaches in Albufeira are free to use. The only possible exceptions are hotels that claim a small section. If you use the tables and chairs that some beaches provide you may have to pay a small fee. However if you just want to lay your towel on the ground and soak up the sun then it won't cost you a thing.
Accomodations
Believe it or not, your best bet for cheap accommodations in Albufeira is to stay in a family home. This practice is quite common and quite safe throughout the Algarve region. Families will rent out rooms in their homes to tourists for a fraction of what the rooms cost in hotels. The bus and train stations are the best places to look for fliers and advertisements. In the busy season don't be surprised if your greeted by someone offering a room. Although quite safe, take precautions. Look at the place first and make sure all keys function. Never leave any valuables such as your passport, travel documents or cash in your room.
