Located near Tatra Mountain, Zakopane is perfect for travelers who love nature and sports. Here are some of the things that you can do while you are visiting this small Polish town.

Extreme Skiing and Snowboarding

The best time to travel in Zakopane is during winter. This small town has hosted several Nordic World Ski Championships and other winter sports Olympics. There are a lot of ski resorts where you can brush up your skills in skiing or snowboarding. Don’t worry if this is your first time to try these extreme winter sports, since all ski resorts in Zakopane have capable instructors who will make you love the sport before the day ends.

Yodel On Top of Mount Tatra

Mount Tatra is a popular site for European climbers, so if you are up for a great outdoor adventure, your travel agent can arrange for you to take on a climbing expedition to the top of this peak to yodel--just like the characters in classical films. Mount Tatra is open for climbers during winter and summer, but the best time to climb the mountain is during winter, when you can climb using crampons and ice axes to get your way to the top.

Ice Skating at a Frozen Lake

You can also go to Morskie Oko, which is located in the higher elevation of Zakopane. Look for the Czarny Slaw, which literally means “Black Lake” in Polish.  This is a deep lake found in the mountains of Zakopane. This lake provides a great view during summer, but it freezes up during the winter and provides a great location for ice skaters. In fact, this frozen lake is a popular site for ice skating competitions in Poland.

Catch the Local Flavors

Before you finish your vacation in Zakopane, you must go to Krupowki Street, located in the main thoroughfare of the town. The street is filled with a lot of local restaurants, bistros, galleries and gift shops.  Sit in one of their bistros, and don’t forget to try their local cheese made from sheep’s milk called “oscypek” and their sauerkraut soup. Sampling the local cuisine is highly recommended before heading back home.
