Shopping in Zakopane
Edit ThisAlthough Poland is only now becoming a happening tourist destination, following political and social upheaval in recent decades, there is a variety of activity to be found in the southern city of Zakopane: shopping, skiing, and other winter sports are all popular in this small, valley city. Located in between ranges of the Tatra mountains, Zakopane is perennially cold and blustry. However, the excellent ski ranges and snowboarding opportunities in this city make it the home to more than 3 million tourists each year, most of them coming from other parts of Europe. Read on for a guide to shopping in this city, for those who either don't appreciate the snow or are tired of spending days on the mountains.
Traditional Arts and Crafts
Perhaps the best souvenirs to find in all of Zakopane are the traditional arts and crafts, sold by a variety of handyworkers throughout Zakopane. These items provide a glimpse into the rural life of the people of the Tatra mountains, and include such items as wooden boxes, leather materials, sheepskin rugs, and more.
Street Markets
Street markets are also popular throughout Zakopane as well, particularly during the warmer seasons when snow activities die down a bit. Look for vendors selling local sheep cheese and other delicacies. It's always best to barter with vendors in this part of Europe, as prices on the street are rarely, if ever, fixed in place. Begin by offering roughly one half of the price that's offered, particularly if you're shopping for a larger item that's more expensive.
Ski and Snowboard Equipment
Due to the heavy influence of the skiing and snowboarding tourism industry in Zakopane, a large percentage of the tourist shops in the city are oriented towards equipment for these two sports. You'll be able to find any number of shops carrying professional-level skiing and snowboarding equipment. The prices in Zakopane are generally quite good, particularly during the off season and in comparison with western Europe.
When shopping in Zakopane, whether indoors or out of doors, be sure to bundle up. This city is not known for being an unsafe place, but it's nonetheless wise to carry your money in a concealed area and avoid making a show of purchasing expensive items.
