Here is a list of Krakow sights that tourists can visit in Poland ’s cultural capital.
Wawel Cathedral
This is one of the most important structures in Krakow as it has witnessed numerous funerals, entombments and coronations of strongmen and monarchs from Poland over the centuries. The main cathedral is a Gothic style structure, but the chapels around it are in different styles as they were built later. The interiors of the Wawel Cathedral consist of alter pieces, tombstones and sarcophagi. There are several statues, chapels and artworks by famous Polish artists inside that make the Wawel Cathedral a must-visit for history and art lovers.
Wieliczka Salt Mine
Located just outside Krakow ’s administrative boundaries in Wieliczka, is the famous Salt mine, known for its extraordinary depth. This salt mine has been in operation for the last 700 years and can be visited today. The mine has chambers and pits that have been carved from sand blocks by hand. In 1978, this mine was included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. This salt mine which measures about 300km and is distributed over nine levels has a labyrinth of tunnels. The deepest measures around 327 meters underground. One part of the mine is open as a museum for visitors.
Krakow City History Museum
Tourists who would love to get an in-depth look into the city’s past should visit the Krakow City History Museum . Situated in the Old Town on Rynek Glowny, this museum is housed in the 17 th century Krzysztofory Palace . The museum features different kinds of objects from the city’s past like armor, clocks, Nativity Scenes from Krakow ’s celebrated szopki, paintings and the costume of Lajkonik.
Park Wodny
Those looking for a break from historical sights and want to have some fun should plan a trip to Park Wodny. Located on ul Dobrego Pasterza, this is the largest water park in Poland . It is only about 2.5 km from the Old Town and is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. This water park boasts of many pools and includes one huge pool that has several slides, water chutes of hundreds of meters and climbing walls. Barbican
Visitors to the city of Krakow shouldn’t miss this attraction. Located in Florianska, Old Town, this is probably the most intriguing remains of medieval fortifications. The Barbican is a strong circular brick bastion that is decorated with seven turrets. Its walls are about 3 meters thick and have about 130 loopholes. Built in 1948, this interesting piece of defensive artwork was meant to be additional protection for the Florian Gate. The Barbican was also connected to the Florian Gate by a narrow channel that ran over a moat at one time. It is one of oldest and probably most beautiful surviving buildings of its kind in Europe .
