Tromso is a attractive mélange of natural beauty and cutting-edge man-made infrastructure. There are mountains, historical churches, beautiful islands and fjords along with scenic villages and state of the art science centers. Here is a smart 7-day itinerary to help tourists enjoy their trip to this fascinating, albeit off-beat, Norwegian town.

Day One: Tromso Cruise Port

Tourists can start their trip with a visit to the panoramic cruise port, where one can spot hundreds of majestic ships docked or departing for their sea-sojourn. Enjoy sightseeing on the harbor and take a cruise to experience the breath-taking views around the port. There is also a Nautical Museum in the vicinity, which is fairly well-stocked and recounts an extensive history of the glorious maritime past of Tromso. The replicas of ancient ships and wartime memorabilia are worth watching.

Day Two: The Lapland Region

Keep a day aside to enjoy the beauty of the Norwegian Lapland, which is an expansive natural area comprising of several fjords and the widened tundra plains. There are miles and miles of greenery and visitors can either cover the belt on foot or drive through the lush reserve. Enjoy the sunset and the beauty of the post-sunset tangerine sky.

Day Three: Divine Interference

Visit the splendid churches of Tromso, starting with the unique Elverhoy Church, built in the 19th century and located a few kilometers to the west of downtown. The entire church along with the medieval Madonna statue has been created out of wood. The painstaking detailing of the altar and the aesthetic interiors make this a popular tourist attraction. Witness the beautiful imagery of the city from the Tromso Bridge. The Tromsdal Church is another fine example of a culmination of modern art and ancient architecture. Visit it to see the lovely stained glass windows and other artistic touches.

Day Four: Hella

Hella is a picturesque village to the east of the Kvaloy region. Visitors can take a tour of the open air musuems and the Kvinnafossen Falls, while watching the charming old world houses along the way. During springtime, visitors can experience a spray from the waterfalls by parking on the route between Leikanger and Hella.

Day Five: Northern Lights Planetarium

The kids will enjoy this one. Make a trip to the Northern Lights Planetarium at the Brevika area in Tromso to gather an insight into the fascinating world of science, astronomy and informative star shows mixed with entertainment and fun. There are hundreds of exhibits, star gazing apparatus and live experiments to satiate the curiosity of young and adult minds. The first dawn of the year sees a popular international music festival taking place at the planetarium, where Norwegian musicians converge to play diverse genres of music.

Day Six: Museum Time

Visit the Skansen Museum for a slice of local tradition and history. There are hundreds of memorabilia chronicling the splendor of the Norwegian culture along with a Polar section that displays, among everything else, fishing gear and other rare angling equipment along with intriguing remains of several maritime expeditions. The Tromso Musuem, located in Strandvein near the university, is a collage of ethnographic collections, replicas of 18th century buildings and other cultural displays. There is also an aquarium in the premises.   

Day Seven: Shopaholics Rejoice!

Take a shopping break and visit Storgate, the town’s main street for some of the best buys ranging from designer merchandise in boutiques to international products and local souvenirs. There are candle making and glass blowing studios along the way along with art galleries and road-side food carts. Visit the flea market at Torget Sqaure and pick up exclusive Rieber Seal fur at the shop near Tromso Bridge.
