This is actually one of the most sparsely populated European countries when you take its size into account. Below are the top five things you must do when in Norway.
1. Medieval CathedralNidaros Cathedral, located in Trondheim, is the largest medieval building, and is considered a national shrine. The oldest parts of the cathedral are from the 12th century. There are many royal stone statues, religious statues and many ornate statues. There are also many stained glass windows, and if you visit during the summer, you can see the Crown Jewels.
2. Gateway to the ArcticIf you are in the area, you should stop at Tromso, known as the Gateway to the Arctic. This town has plenty of bars, breweries, cultural activities, and winter activities. The scenery is absolutely stunning, and you can see period buildings interspersed among the fjords. One of the main attractions in Tromso is the Northern Lights Planetarium.
3. Visit a GlacierAjostedal Glacier National Park is found between the Jostedalsbreen Glacier, the largest glacier in Europe, and a fjord. Walking on a glacier is an exhilarating experience, and one not to miss. This park stretches over 432 square kilometers. Some of the impressive daily sites include the frozen waterfalls and the glacier's movement. You can hike, walk and ski in the national park, or learn all about the glacier at the museum and glacier center. There are different activities during the summer and winter months.
4. The Lofoten IslandsWithin the Arctic Circle are the Lofoten Islands. These are mountainous islands along the northern coastline. You can find the oldest mountain in the world, which is now an extinct volcano. The islands have been inhabited for 6,000 years, and you can stay over in a fisherman’s hut. These huts are traditional and can easily be rented. The islands are fairly warm because of the Gulf Stream. This also means that there is plenty of plant, marine and animal life to see. It is here that you can view the midnight sun from May to July.
5. The MaelstromNear the Saltstraumen Bridge is the Saltstraumen Experience, the strongest maelstrom found in the world. You can view the maelstrom, multimedia show, exhibits, models, and more, all focused on the maelstrom. You can even see seals, fish and penguins in the large pools along the bridge. If you are near Bodo then you should definitely stop in to see the maelstrom.
