Budget Travel Ideas in Oslo
Edit ThisGetting There
Scandinavian Airlines usually have
the best prices to anywhere in northern Europe. Visit flysas.com to
find the cheapest prices to fly to Oslo, Norway. If you are in New York
City, though, I would suggest icelandair.com.
Places to Stay
For any budget traveler, hostels are well known places of
accommodation. Oslo, being the capital city of Norway, has many to
choose from. Not only are hostels generally the cheapest places to
sleep, but you usually share a room with others. This may sound a bit
intimidating, but it is an excellent way to meet new people, and, if
you're traveling by yourself, most everyone in these rooms will ask you
to join them. Many of the people staying at these hostels are around
the same age - young adults. For around $75 per night, you can stay at
a nicer hostel, or for around $50 per night, you can go to a smaller
hostel.
Getting Around
The EuRail passes are always
a good idea if you are wanting to travel around the country or to other
countries, but for in-town travel, you would want something a bit more
precise. The Oslo Pass, of which you can find more about on
www.visitoslo.com., will give you free entrance to 35 museums, free
public transport usage within zones 1-4 (most of the city - see website
for exacts and maps), and numerous discounts on most anything you'd
want to do in Oslo. These passes come in 24 ($35), 48 ($51), or 72
($65) hours. There are further specials for children and seniors. Many
people say that Norway, especially Oslo, is very expensive, but there
are ways to travel on a budget here and still have just as much fun
with less money. Don't be discouraged!
Things to Do
If you are looking to go to
museums, the Oslo Pass is very affordable and offers so much. However,
if the Oslo Pass is still too expensive, or you'd like to be outside
instead of cooped up in dark museums all day, there are still many
beautiful things to see that cost absolutely nothing, except what you
pay to get there. Aker Brygge is a popular harbor and a large tourist
destination, with a beautiful view of the Oslo Fjord. Walking down the
main street, Karl Johanns Gate, you will come to the royal palace of
Norway. It is a large, beautiful castle-like structure, even equipped
with guards! Also, the Akerselva River runs straight through Oslo and
has many waterfalls and small, medieval-looking bridges.
