Top 5 Must Do's in North Cape

Edit This

North Cape must do's take advantage of its location as a coastal area and the northern-most point in Europe. Visitors must realize travel during the winter months can be limited and should consult local travel companies for assistance.

Midnight Sun/Northern Lights

Unfortunately, visitors are not able to take in both of these unique opportunities at the same time.

The Midnight Sun, or sun 24-hours-a-day, can be seen from mid-May to the end of July. There are many special activities during this time to take advantage of the extra daylight--midnight cruises, bird watching, hiking and even golfing are popular midnight activities during these early summer months.

The Northern Lights are best viewed in the Arctic Circle. The viewing times are generally October, February and March and not during full moons. Special activities to view the lights include dog sledding and snowmobile "safaris." Keep in mind daylight is at a premium during the winter months.

Weather conditions are factors for both the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun. Visitors hoping to take advantage of these unique "sights" should plan to visit the area for more than just a day or two in case weather patterns need to clear.

North Cape Cliff

Offering some of the best views in the North Cape, the cliff has historically been a marker among fisherman. The cliff is over 300 meters above sea level. It is one of the best spots to view either the midnight sun or the northern lights.

Kirkeporten Rock Formation

The rock formation in Skarsvag is a giant cliff and gate which offers amazing views. The midnight sun actually shines through the gate. The rock formation is reached by a two and a half km hike from the camping area. As with all trails in the region, visitors must be careful not to walk on or disturb the local plants.

Fishing

The North Cape is a historically significant fishing area. Located where the Norwegian Sea meets the Barents Sea, there are several fishing options for visitors. Try deep sea fishing from May to September or take a king crab safari.

Bird Watching

Bird watching is another popular ecological tourist activity on the North Cape. Those interested in nature might participate in a bird safari, including those to the Gjesværstappan Nesting Cliffs, host to over two million puffins. It is one of the largest puffin colonies in northern Norway.
