Bryggen also known as Tyskebryggen ("the German Wharf") is a series of Hanseatic commercial buildings lining the eastern side of the fjord coming into Bergen. Bryggen is on the UNESCO list for World Cultural Heritage sites. The city of Bergen was founded in 1070. In 1360 a Kontor of the Hanseatic League was established there, and as the town developed into an important trading centre, the wharfs were improved. The administrative buildings of Bryggen housed clerks from many areas, especially Germany. The warehouses were filled with goods, particularly fish from northern more..

Håkon Hall
Edit ThisHåkon's Hall
Håkon's Hall has taken its name from its first builder, King Håkon Håkonsson, and was erected between 1247 and 1261. The hall was the largest and most imposing building in the royal residence at "Holmen" (the holm), the political centre of the 13th-century Norwegian kingdom. It was obviously built for the great occasions in the history of the monarchy and the realm, but also for practical daily use.

Troldhaugen - home of Edvar Grieg
Edit ThisHome of Edvar Grieg
Troldhaugen was the home of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. His and his wife's ashes rest inside a mountain tomb near the house. The house itself and its surroundings are now a Grieg museum. Edvard Grieg himself called the building "my most important composition," although the building was designed by his cousin, the architect Schak Bull. The name comes from Trold meaning "Troll" and Haug meaning "small hill". In 1985 a small concert hall was built in the valley. Below the concert hall lies Grieg's small Composer's Hut.

Fantoft Stave Church
Edit ThisChurch interior
This is only a short bus ride from the centre of Bergen. Make sure you get off at the FIRST stop for the church or you will have a steep walk up through the woods from the next.
This could be called a 'new' old church as the original was burnt down in 1992. The replacement was constructed to the original pattern and completed in 1997. In 1998 the fresh wood smell conflicted hugely with the architectural design! The original was actually brought here from a site in the Sogn area in the second part of the 19th century, having been first built in the 12th century.

Bryggen
Edit ThisFacing the water from the market, you will see the impressive old buildings of Bryggen to your right across the water. These are reminiscent of the days when Bergen was an important port of the Hanseatic League.
Now the buildings form museums, restaurants and expensive shops.
Usually these buildings are photographed from the front [as in the website below] but the rear is also worth seeing.

Ole Bull statue
Edit ThisOle Bull
Ole Bull is mentioned on the main Bergen page and his home, Lysøen, is one of the Tourist Board's suggested sights. He was a violinist with an international reputation.
This statue is found only a short distance from the waterfront market and is an example of the way Bergen is highlighted by green spaces and objects of interest.
