Sights in Zandvoort

Edit This

Although the beach is undoubtedly the main attraction, there are some other excellent Zandvoort sights to see. This is a popular Dutch seaside resort that is just outside of Amsterdam along the North Sea coast. The resort has two distinct seasons: spring/summer, and then winter.  Most of the tourists come during the warmer times.

The Beach

The beach is beautiful, and stretches for nine kilometers. Lining the beach are holiday huts and beach pavilions. The pavilions provide bathing facilities, water sports and food for those enjoying the beach. The sunset on the beach is quite stunning and should not be missed. On the south end of the beach is a naturist beach that is two and a half kilometers in length.

Many people come to Zandvoort for the racing, as there is a Formula 1 race track right along the beach. This race track was once dune land, but the city leveled the ground and eventually put down asphalt. There are many races held at the track, and many people make a weekend of it for those famous races.

The Dunes

There are two nature reserves along the coast that contain dunes. Besides being nature reserves, they also provide defense against the ocean. The main dune areas are Zuid-Kennemerland National and Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. You can find many paths for hikers, walkers and bicyclers, and these dunes are a great place for bird watching, as they contain more than two hundred different kinds of birds.

Some Town History

Inside the old cultural center, you can see models of what the town once looked like as well as old postcards of the town. The exhibitions frequently change and there are several videos. If you want to learn a little bit about the town’s history, you should stop in and take a look.

Two Well Known Landmarks

The water tower is a famous landmark. This was blown up in 1943 by the German army, and a new water tower was built at the highest point in the city.  This water tower is shaped like an octagon, and was constructed using concrete and bricks. At the top there was once a café, though this closed down in the 1990s.

Another town landmark is the Zandvoort passage. The passage is an original building that linked the lower railway station with the Kurrhaus station. You could travel between these stations by climbing up or down the ornate and embellished staircases. The passage was two stories high and had a glass roof. After construction, many cafes, restaurants, shops and lunchrooms were built along the site, and you could expect to hear an evening concert. The building was damaged in a fire, but you can still see the remains today.
