Vlieland island Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see In several respects,
Vlieland is different from other Dutch Wadden islands.
Vlieland island is the furthest removed from the mainland, and yet 90 ferry
minutes away from Harlingen harbour, or even only 45 if you take the comfortable fast ferry.
Furthermore, Vlieland, like Schiermonnikoog island, has only one small village, Oost-Vlieland harbour... all
other islands have several more. But in the trees shaded Dorpsstraat, cosy
shops offer a wide range of everyday needs on holiday.
If in the other islands, except Schiermonnikoog, you're welcome as a motorist
traveller, Vlieland municipality doesn't allow you to bring your car or
motorcycle to the island... this means that nothing, basically, would
disturb the overwhelming impression of peace and quiet of this beauty spot.
However, during weekdays from September to April, "the Vliehors" at
the western end of the island is used for target practice exercises by NATO and
the Royal Dutch Air force. Fortunately, exercises are put on hold in the
tourist high season months from May until September, and during all weekends, autumn half-term and Christmas holidays.
Vlieland island being relatively small, cycling is the ideal way to
explore it. It's easy to find a bicycle rental. When making a ride in
beautiful
local sceneries, using the 26 kms of bicycle path, you will never loose
sight
of the characteristic red lighthouse at Vuurboetsduin.. your landmark
for safe
discoveries of this fascinating island all by yourself.
