Museums in Volendam

Edit This
Along the sleepy banks of the river IJ is Volendam. This once vital harbor town has carved itself a new corner in the world; one of historical tributes and living traditions. Those seeking the past will find it still alive here, and Volendam Museums only help to further craft a perfect picture.

Volendam Museum

Centered within this town with charmingly tiled gables and red-brick facing is the Volendam Museum. The museum treats its guests to local treasures. Paintings, photographs and more will showcase the origins of Volendam and its importance to Holland. Literary and musical themes are also examined, with exhibits featuring rare pages and instruments. And the unique cigar band collection (made to resemble mosaics) will please with its 11 million pieces. It’s the culmination of what once was and is to be enjoyed. Scheduling may require some diligence, however. It is open only from March until November.

The Harbor

While perhaps not the most common conception for Volendam Museums, the harbor does provide guests with Dutch sailing ships and a flurry of traditional clothing (worn still by the citizens). Statues are also found along the boardwalk, representing scenes of everyday life. It’s an outdoor experience that proves the city’s endurance and its respect for the past. There is no better destination to understand the evolution from trade to tourism.

Volendam is often dismissed as too quaint, too self-aware. But its reverence for history marks it worthy of any vacation. It is itself a living museum. Explore.
