Cruises in Volendam
Edit ThisTake an Exciting Cruise to the Ports of Enkhuizen and Harlingen
Various exciting Volendam cruises are offered at Volendam harbor. The best cruise option out there is no doubt the possibility of taking a trip to the ports of Enkhuizen and Harlingen. Sailing is possible either in modern barges or in traditional old sailing ships. Here are some more details on the two destinations.
Enkhuizen
Enkhuizen is located about 25km northwest of Volendam, right on the border between Markermeer and IJsseimeer. Enkhuizen is a small town, but it runs one of the biggest harbors in the Netherlands. The town was formed back in the 14th century, which explains the richness of historical sights around. Some of the more attractive ones are the 17th century town walls (a large part of which is fully preserved, including the town gate and an impressive tower), the town hall dating from the same era, and the two beautiful 15th century churches. You should definitely see them, as your cruise ship will dock at Enkhuizen.
Harlingen
Harlingen is located about 60km northwest of Enkhuizen on the shores of Waddenzee. Just like Enkhuizen, Harlingen is an old town with a rich history in sailing and fishing. Among the different sights are the beautiful Catholic Saint Michael Church and Grote of Nieuwe Kerk church tower dating from the 1200s. Make sure to visit the Harlingen Pottery Museum and the Hannemahuis Community Museum. The town isn’t that big, so you will have plenty of time to see all of its sights.
