The Roman Emperor Claudius, in A.D. 47 ordered his general Corbulo to build a wall along the riverside of Rhine. One of the strongholds was built at the crossing in the river called Trajectum. This name was later changed to Utrecht.
Population
The inhabitants in the year 2009 were 300,000. Sixty-nine percent of the population of Utrecht is native, whereas 31 percent are immigrants. The unemployment rate for the population is 8.76 percent. The growth in the population is expected to be higher that other big cities in Netherlands.
Culture
The city has quite a vibrant culture. The night life is enjoyed a lot with the discos and bars; there are also lots of theaters. Vredenburg is the classic musical center of the city. Utrecht government arranges free admission for cultural Sundays all over the city regularly on variety of themes to help maintain the culture of the city.
Geography
The city is on the Rhine and is about 20 miles southeast of Amsterdam. It is situated at 52.10 latitude and 5.12 longitude. The average elevation is 1 meter. The city became the seat for bishop in 696. In 1579, the 7 provinces of the northern Netherlands came together to sign the pact stating, ‘Help each other in their fight against the Spanish rules.' This further laid the foundation of Dutch independence.
