Museums in Utrecht
Edit ThisUtrecht is one of the best cities in the Netherlands when it comes to museums. For a city of its size, there is an amazing diversity of museums, all of which are worth visiting.
Centraal Museum
The most important in Utrecht is the Centraal Museum. A municipal and general museum, Centraal is known for its extensive collections. It has traditional and contemporary art, but also rooms dedicated to design and historical artifacts. The Centraal museum is large enough that it deserves repeat trips. The thousand year old 'Utrecht Ship' is particularly popular with tourists. The museum is open Tuesday to Thursday and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to5 p.m. and Friday from noon to 9 p.m. The museum is located in the heart of the MuseumQuarter. Admission is 8 euros.
Museum Cathrigneconvent
This is the most important religious museum in the country, a museum that honors the religious history of the region and one that is often overlooked in European history books. The building was formerly a 16th century monastery and there is a large collection of Christian art. If you're interested in the religious history of the Netherlands, there is no better museum. The museum is known for its Dutch Golden Age paintings as well as its permanent collection of artifacts. The museum is particularly well-suited for an English-speaker, as there is captioning and a free audio tour in English. The museum is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is 8.50 euros but there are discounts for youth, seniors and families.
