Noordpolderzijl in winter season viewed from the polder side

Don't expect a booming harbour village here; there's just about a landing stage for 3 or 4 ships and a cafe... but it will be hard to find a more authentic spot in the whole Netherlands...

Noordpolderzijl is the smallest sea harbour of the Netherlands. It's located in the north (of the province of Groningen) and it is in direct tide-connection with the Waddensea. Only small ships can make this harbour at high tide because of limited navigable depth.

The harbour's name shows exactely what it stands for: the zijl of the North polder, where a "zijl" is a sluice and a "polder", especially in the Netherlands, is an area of low-lying land, that has been reclaimed from the sea and is protected by dikes.

The one and only house in Noordpolderzijl is an authentically driven cafe. Check the [Bars & Cafes] section.
