Edit ThisNieuw Statenzijl is the SE-most location of the Ems-Dollard estuary, a
unique tidal area east of Delfzijl in the Netherlands and south of
Emden in Germany. This region is best explored on foot or by bicycle
either from Nieuw Statenzijl or starting from the NW at Termunterzijl
or Termunten.
The region is worth a visit in every season, but when snow and ice crack under your feet , the scenery is breathtaking.

If you're interested in biology you should't miss the unique Fish Migration Project
of the the National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management (RIKZ)
conducted in the Breebaart polder near to Nieuw Statenzijl.
Research in the Ems-Dollard estuary, between 1999 and 2001,
revealed the occurrence of nine species of diadromous fish, i.e. fish
that live in saltwater but spawn in freshwater or vice versa.
It underscored the importance of the restoration of freshwater/saltwater interfaces.
