Lighthouse

The first lighthouse in Marken was built in the year 1700. But later on the foundations were added to it in 1839. Because of its shape, locals call it by the name "Paard." It is no longerf a destination marker for ships in the sea. But it is used to host events, water sports and other occasions. It is the focal point of Marken and there are residents who look after the architecture.


Marker Museum

It is an epitome of architectural excellence in Marken. There are six cottages of former fishermen which are now used to accommodate the museum. In one of these cottages you get to see the lifestyle of a fisherman in the earlier part of 1930. Various audio-visual displays and other exhibits related to technology and fashion are also housed here.


Shopping

Marken does not offer remarkably lucrative facilities for shopping.  But you will come across several souvenir shops selling wood-crafted items, wooden shoes and many more. You can find shops featuring books, groceries and stationery items at a close by place called Edam. Volendam is also a nice place to shop for various items.
