Top 5 Must Do's in Marken

Edit This

A peninsula in the Ijsselmeer region of the Netherlands, Marken does not give a striking first impression to any first-time visitor. Indeed, the quiet little fishing village does not have much to do, but a day time here would definitely be the way to go. Here are some of the Marken Must Do’s.

Walk Around

Silly as it may sound, walking around is definitely the first thing to do upon arrival in Marken. The countryside is simply beautiful, especially in the spring season. Wildflowers are everywhere, cows graze on the grass and the sun is shining in a distance – a perfect combination for that perfect morning walk. Fewer cars in the area and the Dutch government’s emphasis on renewable energy have also brought about a crispness in the quality of the air around here. So, just simply unwind.

Visit the Wooden Houses

Looking like something straight out of a movie or a novel, the wooden houses are what drive tourists to the region. Colored in bright shades of green, orange, red and blue, the houses emanate a certain Dutch quality while retaining its countryside simplicity. People still reside in most of these houses and locals are very friendly and may even welcome tourists into their homes for a little drink of water or milk from their own barn.

Climb the Paard van Marken

The lighthouse of Marken is one of the highlights of the trip as well. Standing proudly among the rocks is the lighthouse that provided for ships that were going to dock on the Dutch mainland. Now, it is no longer operated, but the keeper will gladly let tourists in for a look. The structure is made out of traditional stones and mortar, creating a slightly romantic, antiquated outward appearance.

People Watch

The people in Marken reflect the pride of the Dutch people in their national costumes. Watch the girls go about daily chores, particularly during the school holiday period in the Netherlands, in their beautiful skirts and aprons. The fishermen also wear their traditional costumes out to sea, and watch as they return from the day with their catch and nets. The people here are  exceedingly friendly and polite, and will be happy to answer any of your questions.

Drive Along the Waters

Located in a lake, the waters of Marken promise to be beautiful. The Ijsselmeer is the largest lake in Western Europe, and is a fresh water reserve. This means that the waters of Marken are teeming with life – fish, ducks, and other freshwater creatures. The area is rather large, so it is more advisable to drive than to walk, but that shouldn’t prevent anyone from stopping to take a few photos or looking at the ducks along the way!
