Sights in Marken
Edit ThisAlthough Marken in the Netherlands is a rather small village, there are plenty of Marken sights that visitors can explore and view. Marken was once an old fishing town, and the architecture of the homes reflects this to the present day, with quaint little cottages on every street. Marken in the perfect place to escape to when the noise and activity of the larger Dutch cities becomes a bit too much to bare.
Sijte Boes
Sijte Boes is a local hero to the people of Marken. She began selling locally made Marken souvenirs from the comfort of her own home. Her career began in the early 1900's and, in a way, continues on to the present day. Although Sijte Boes has passed away, her home is still used as Marken's main souvenir shop. Visitors are welcome to view the house, which has been kept as its former owner would have liked. Visitors are also welcome to browse the many items for sale in the souvenir shop. The home and shop are open during regular business hours 7 days a week, during the peak tourist season.
The Marina
Marken has one of the smallest marinas in all of Europe. But despite its small size, it is still worth exploring. The marina marks both the start and end point to the Marken-in-the-Round 8k circular walk. There are also some great fish bars, restaurants and shops near by. Visitors will be treated to some lovely architecture by viewing the many boats that are moored in the marina. Its also quite easy to book passage to Volendam by hiring one of the boat owners for the day.
Rozewerf
Marken is known for its own style of architecture. Many of the homes are designed after fishing cottages, giving the town a charming and quaint look. Rozewerf is a cluster of homes that is built on top of a mound. Before the dyke was built around the town, the area suffered immensely from floods. Visitors are allowed on the mound, which locals will call the "island." Being invited in is purely up to the residents. The houses are clustered together with only a tiny alleyway separating them. Although this is due largely to the limited space available, it gives the area a warm and cozy feeling.
The Lighthouse
Marken's lighthouse was first built in 1700, and its foundations were later added on in 1839. Locals refer to it as the paard (Dutch for "horse") due to its shape. The lighthouse is no longer a guide for ships, but it still gets used for ceremonial occasions and for water sports. The lighthouse does not have a keeper but there are residents that help maintain this Marken focal point.
