Escape to Marken and Enjoy a Dutch Festival

To be frank, Marken festivals do not really exist. The island of Marken is small and isolated, and the small population here does not celebrate any named or substantial festivals of their own. Despite this, you can visit the island for a trip back in time and see traditional Dutch attire and lifestyles while you visit a festival in one of the larger nearby cities. Just 26 kilometers away (about a half hour drive), Amsterdam has many great festivals to enjoy. Some of those festivals include:

Canal Festival

Held in August in downtown Amsterdam along the river, this nine day festival features nearly 100 classical music concerts. There are also events for babies, toddlers, and teenagers. Most events are free, although some concerts charge a small admission fee.

Holland Festival

Held in June, this annual festival has been held for more than six decades and is one of the largest international art festivals in Holland. Theatre, dance, music, opera, and arts from the east and the west are a part of this large event. This festival is also held in various venues around Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Roots Festival

Held in June for the past 13 years, the Roots festival offers a broad spectrum of music performances. Opening events are held outdoors in Ooster Park. International bands perform daily. The festival is free and has events for all ages. Dancing and culinary exhibitions are also part of the event.
