Top 5 Must Do's in Maastricht
Edit ThisOld Town Charm
Maastricht is one of the oldest towns in Holland and is known for its shopping districts. Shopping is ample whether you walk the cobblestone streets and shop at the markets on the squares or visit the center of the modern city, you will find everything from fish markets to popular department stores.
True Expierence
Between Vrijthof' square and the railway station there is a variety of stores for indoor shopping. For a true experience visit the markets on the squares on Wednesday or Friday mornings, which are the busiest times. There you will find local produce, fish, flea markets and specialties including flan, apple dumplings, gingerbread, chocolate and more. Street musicians perform and you will find the residents to be genuinely friendly people.
Must-see Museums
Three museums to visit are the Natuurhistorisch (Natural History) Museum, the Bonnefanten Museum and the Dolls Museum. The Natuurhistorisch has new exhibits each year and is located in the old city at De Bosquetplein 7. The Bonnefanten Art Museum’s is as well known for its building as the varied collection of art inside and is located at Avenue Ceramique 250. The Dolls Museum located at Grote Gracht 41, exhibits 400 antique children’s dolls from 1780 to 1950 and also doll furniture, tea services, toys and teddy bears.
From the Water
A river Maas boat tour is a great way to see the city. The trip lasts about 50 minutes and travels to the Belgian border and back. For about $10 you can take a boat ride and tour the St. Pietersberg Caves. There are tours conducted regularly and there are English tours July through September at 3 pm. The thousands of tunnels and passages have a lot of history.
The Beauty of Nature
There are many gardens to choose from but a don’t miss is the Botanical Garden at the Natural History Museum which houses a large number of plants. The gardens are divided into different flowerbeds which display species in their habitats. Located south of the city are 6 parks in what is known as the Green Belt.
Relax with Cocoa
Relax after a day of sightseeing at one of the most popular pubs and
restaurants, John Mullins Irish Pub. It is an attraction for all
travelers as it is a genuine Irish pub where you can find a great pint
of beer, wonderful tasting food and a friendly atmosphere and staff. A
tip to travelers, the hot chocolate in the Netherlands is a must have
and can be found in any bar.
