Senior Travel in Maastricht
Edit ThisTraveling to a place such as Maastrichtcan prove both enchanting and challenging for the senior citizen. Maastricht senior travel has both excellent points and aspects that are less than favorable. Knowing what to expect ahead of time can help you better prepare and meet the challenges present.
Disabled Access
Maastricht is a very old city, with some of its buildings dating back as far as the 12th century. They are very beautiful and charming to look at, but the long, narrow structure can make them a bit of a pain to explore. It isn't uncommon to see buildings in Maastricht (as well as the rest of The Netherlands) that have 5 or more floors and no elevator. Many of the staircases are long and narrow, created for people of their time. This is a point worth considering when planning your sightseeing tours. It isn't all bad news. The Dutch are very friendly and accommodating people, and when special arrangements can be made they certainly will do their best. If there is a particular place you have your heart set on seeing, but fear it may be impractical in your current physical state, call ahead and ask if anything can be done.
Holland Rail Pass
The HollandRail pass is available to all non-residents of The Netherlands. It allows for heavily discounted rail travel anywhere in the country for either 3 or 5 days in any given month. Although open to people of all ages, those over the age of 60 are entitled to further discount without any restrictions.
Visit in the Month of May
May offers several advantages for seniors visiting Maastricht or any city in the Netherlands. One of the first is the change in weather. The temperatures will have started to rise, but won't be hot as they are in the summer months. May is also still a shoulder season, so the immense crowds that filter in will still be months away. Being that May is in the shoulder season, senior travelers can also take advantage of the lower prices that are still present. Finally, May brings something that The Netherlands are most famous for, the tulips. For those that love to see the endless colorful fields of flowers, this time of year is perfect.
