Museums in Maastricht
Edit ThisEmbedded with a rich and storied history, it should come as no surprise that Maastricht features some of the finest museums in all of Europe.
Bonnefantenmuseum
This extraordinary museum houses an impressive Dutch and Flemish Old Masters collection, one of the finest in all of the Netherlands. Inside you will find works by such luminaries as Peter Paul Rubens, David Teniers and Jacob Jordaens. The museum also boasts a mixture of contemporary artwork, medieval sculptures, wood carvings, silverwork and archeological finds.
Natuurhistorisch Museum
On display at the Natural History Museum in Maastricht, guests will find dinosaur remains, as well as the skeletons of ancient giant turtles. The museum highlights the region’s history, going back as far as 300 million years ago. Guests can also view various gems, rocks and minerals pertinent to the area.
Spaans Gouvernement
Dating back to the 16th century, this palace once served as the home to the Dukes of Brabant. Today, featuring elegantly preserved furniture from the 17th and 18th century, it now serves as a museum. Also inside, you can survey historic artwork, glasswork and silverwork relating to the palatial estate.
Derlon Museum Cellar
One of the more unusual museums in Maastricht, the Derlon Museum Cellar actually began as the result of the Derlon Hotel’s restoration project. During the process, workers discovered a series of ancient Roman artifacts in the basement, including a cobblestone road and portions of a gate and wall. Today the basement remains open for guests interested in touring the site.
