7 Day Itinerary in Maastricht
Edit ThisThe city of Maastrict in the Netherlands promises to be both educational and scenic for the foreign traveler. From the endless green fields to the rich history, both ancient and modern, a Maastrict itinerary is full of wonderful sights to see.
Day 1-St. Pieterburg Caves
By taking a short boat ride north of Maastrict, travelers will arrive at the St. Pieterburg caves. These were used as shelters by the Dutch during the second World War, to escape Nazi persecution. Visitors will be astounded at what they built inside to ensure their survival. The caves are said to be damp and cold, so dress warmly if you do the tour. English tours are limited, but the guides are flexible and willing to translate for foreign guests.
Day 2-Bonnefanten Museum
Art enthusiasts, historians and archaeologists will appreciate what is on display at the Bonnefanten Museum. Most noted for the archaeological finds from the area, the museum is also home to 16th through 18th century painting from south Holland. Scriptures from the Maarsland and sculptures also make up their collections.
Day 3- The Kniepp Cure Center
For a blissful experience guaranteed to relieve your aches and pains, travelers are advised to visit The Kniepp Cure Center. Hot baths, massage and other complementary therapies are offered while you enjoy the luxury of a 13th Century chateau.
Day 4- The Natural History Museum
The perfect spot for both adults and children, the Natural History Museum features exhibits in Botany, Entomology and Paleontology. Special exhibits for children and educational tours are also available. Located in the old city the museum is open Monday through Friday, 10 am to 5pm and weekends from 2 to 5 pm.
Day 5- The Maastrict Caves
The Maastrict caves are a subterranean system of tunnels that run under the city. Guided tours are available for about 3 euros, but English tours are limited. Visiting the caves in December will bring the added treat of the Christmas market in the caves.
Day 6- The Maastrict Brewery
An important part of the city's history, the Maastrict Brewery is like walking back in time. Tours seem only available in Dutch, and do require a fair amount of walking, so be prepared. However, the brewery represents a nice piece of local Dutch history.
Day 7- John Mullins Pub
At the end of a busy week of touring, lunch and/or dinner in an authentic Irish pub could be just the ticket. John Mullins has a charming and quaint atmosphere with a combination Irish and Dutch staff. Visitors give high praise to the food and quality service.
