Top 5 Must Do's in Haarlem
Edit ThisHaarlem must do's have to be planned for ahead of visiting the city, as it has a lot of activities to offered. Harlem, as it's known in English, is the capital of North Holland, which was once a very prominent and powerful province among the seven provinces that comprised the Dutch Republic. Haarlem is a large city and municipality more specifically located in northern metropolitan Randstad, and can be found on the river Spaarne, which is about 20 km away from Amsterdam to the west. As of 2009, residents of Haarlem were estimated to be about 148,000. Haarlem is known for its tulips, thus its nickname, "Bloemenstad" or flower city. If you are visiting the city for the first time, here's a guide to help you create a great Haarlem must do's list.
1. Bicycle Strolls around the Parks
Take a nature trip to Haarlem's parks to experience its flowers in full bloom. Haarlemmerhout is the city's oldest park with gorgeous landscape and deer. Keukenhof Gardens is one of the largest flower gardens in the world where you can buy tulip bulbs and witness exhilarating flower exhibits.
2. Visit the Museums and Churches
Make your way down to Frans Hals Museum, home of the city's captivating artifacts and works of Frans Hals. Sint-Bavokerk Church, with its architecture reminiscent of the 1400s, cobblestone floors and wooden furniture, is a Haarlem landmark that's not to be missed. Admire its stained glass and lose yourself in grand organ concerts.
3. Taste Haarlem's Beer
In the past centuries, beer brewing was a lucrative business in the Netherlands. Although there are not so many breweries in operation today, there is one that is marketed as "Haarlem bier," created from old recipes. It is always worth a try.
4. Shopping Streets and Centers
Any tourist will enjoy shopping in Grote Houtstraat, a long shopping street that goes through the center of Haarlem. It is a popular market for both residents and tourists. Botermarkt is a popular spot for souvenirs and outlet shops. Schalkwijk and the Haarlem shopping center offer a more modern shopping experience.
5. Enjoy Meals at Renowned Restaurants
L'Anders is a popular restaurant known for its ambiance. Its large terrace makes the dining experience unforgettable. Restaurant Willendorf offers the best lobsters and the ever popular Dutch "sticky milk pie." Willendorf is loved for its sumptuous entrees, and their relaxing cocktail bar.
