Museums in Haarlem
Edit ThisMuseums and Exhibits
Telyers Museum
This museum is the oldest museum that the Netherlands has to offer. It was built in 1784 to keep the artifacts of science and paintings that Pieter Teyler van der Hulst so loved. After he died, he stated in his will that the building of the museum should continue to grow. And it did, taking in items of his interest for about two centuries. The 12 buildings that make up the museum have all kinds of collections ranging from paintings to fossils. There are also teaching seminars for adults and children. A trip here would not be complete without seeing this spectacular museum.
Corrie ten Boom House
This exhibition house has been restored to resemble what it looked like during the 1940’s. This house was greatly significant during World War Two. It was in this house that Jews and others were held in a safe place away from the Nazi’s. The house is a testament to those who were Christians and lived by the grace of God and loved others. Corrie became a ringleader of the Haarlem underground for those running from persecution. The house has information booklets that tell the story of the Boom family, including their help to others and their capture by the Gestapo and what happened to each member in the Nazi concentration camps.
Windmill de Adriaan
A trip spent in Haarlem would not be complete without going to the huge elaborate windmill that is close to the center of town. What is unique about this exhibit is that you can learn firsthand all about how wind produces energy. As you go through the tour you get instruction in telling about how mills work and what is so influential about the Adriaan. It is a great time to see one of the most remarkable structures in Haarlem and learn something entertaining at the same time.

Teyler Museum
Edit ThisThe Teyler museum is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands and started out as collection of Pieter Teyler a rich trader in Silk. He was very much interested in Art and Sciences and collected to give average people a chance to marvel at the miracles of modern science. After his death, he left his estate to further this mission.
The museum shows these early examples of science in action, all set in a very 18th century athmosphere. In a way it is more a museum about museums then a museum about science, but the exhibits are excellent.
