The countryside outside of the town has a lot to offer for those who like eye-catching landscapes. You also have the option of choosing from interesting local or farther away day trips. Whether you are in a group or a single traveler it doesn’t matter. The atmosphere of Haarlem and its surroundings will set you at ease and allow you to enjoy your trips.

Local Day Trips:

Elswout Forest

Going out on a bike ride to the Elswout forest is a great way to spend the day.  You can enjoy the enchanting Dutch environment while getting out of the town for a short time. The route to the forest is very scenic but the real treat is when you get there. On the forest grounds you can observe an old hermitage and the original breeding pheasantry. The forest is home to all kinds of pretty flowers and lively animals.  There are many bike paths to ride through which takes you by all sorts of sight-seeing wonders.

Spaarnwoude Park

Biking out to this recreational park gives you an insight of what the former inhabitants' lifestyle was like. While you are riding around the park you get to see all sorts of windmills and old farms with cows grazing in the fields. Stop by at the Spaarwoude Village to see how some of the people still live like they did in the late 1940s.

Away Day Trips:

Amstelkring and Van Gogh Museums

Take a train out to Amsterdam to visit some amazing museums. The Museum Amstelkring is quite the place to visit. There is a large amount of the church’s silver items, religious artifacts and old church paintings. Another artist's museum to visit is Van Gogh’s museum. This museum holds over 700 drawings and paintings of his, more than any other museum showcasing his works.

Rijksmuseum

This is a 1-day excursion that you will never forget. The Rijksmuseum is the largest museum in the Netherlands and it displays some of the most well known works of Dutch artists since the 17th century. It takes at least a whole day to walk through and view the prominent Dutch artists like Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals in their entire splendor. This is a must to do activity while you stay in Haarlem.
